UW alum Kayley DeLay of Brooks Beasts wins 1500m at Sound Running Sunset Tour...
In Los Angeles, Washington alum Kayley DeLay (Ken Martinez/WestCoastXC photo) of Seattle's Brooks Beasts won the women's 1500 at the Sound Running Sunset Tour Saturday night at Jack Kemp Stadium on the campus of Occidental College.
DeLay, known primarily as a steeplechase specialist before an injury last season limited her to the flat track for all but one race in 2025, bided her time as she was part of a group of six runners behind early leader Angelina Ellis of Under Armour Dark Sky through the first 800.
With one lap to go, the group still hadn't broken up, with Ellis still controlling the front. However, DeLay used a 63 second final lap to take the victory in a personal best 4:04.64, wiping out her previous best of 4:04.99 set last year in Pfungstadt, Germany.
Teagan Schein-Becker of the Beasts was fourth in 4:06.58, and Washington alum Eleanor Fulton was eighth in 4:08.83.
In other highlights, Parker Stokes of the Beasts was third in the 3000 steeplechase in a season best 8:19.67. Washington alum Aaron Ahl was tenth in 8:35.57, and fellow alum Julius Diehr was 16th in 8:45.84.
Waleed Suliman of the Beasts was third in the top section of the men's 1500 in 3:35.31, while newcomer Max Davies was ninth in 3:44.48.
Valery Tobias of the Beasts was fifth in the top section of the women's 800, running 1:59.91. In a separate section, Laura Pellicoro was third in 2:01.79.
In the top section of the men's 800, Beasts Brannon Kidder and John Rivera were fifth and seventh in 1:45.51, and 1:46.52, respectively.
The women's 5000 saw Gonzaga's Rosina Machu finish second in 15:38.91, while Chloe Scrimgeour was seventh in 16:04.00.
In Kortrijk, Belgium, Washington's Reuben Reina, Jr, fresh off a victory in Cork, Ireland on Wednesday over a mile, dropped down in distance, and finished fifth in the top section of the men's 800 at the Moore Guldensporenmeeting Kortrijk.
Reina, whose previous personal best at 800 meters was 1:49.97, ran 1:47.51, just ahead of Mill Creek native Grant Grosvenor's 1:47.63 in sixth.
Washington alum Justin O'Toole was eighth in the top section, running 1:49.00.
In the top section of the women's 800, Washington's Mia Cochran, who also raced in Cork, finished sixth in a personal best time of 2:03.95, while UW teammate Jenica Swartz was seventh in 2:04.19.
After winning the 100 in Barcelona earlier last week, former WSU sprinter Mason Lawyer finished third in the top section of the men's 200 and seventh overall, running 20.75.
