Eagles' Quintin Porterfield second at break of Big Sky decathlon as Championship Week starts...
Championship week for eight of the state's nine NCAA Division I and II schools started Wednesday as the decathlon and heptathlon competitions at the BIG SKY CONFERENCE championship got underway in Ogden, Utah.
Eastern Washington's Quintin Porterfield (above/photo courtesy EWU Athletics) ended day 1 of the decathlon in second place, finishing with 3694 points, 84 points behind first day leader Caleb Whitney of Weber State University.
Porterfield got off to a fast start, winning both the 100 (11.01) and the long jump (23-5.5/7.15m), before Whitney flipped the script, winning the shot put (40-7.5/12.38m), high jump (6-6/1.98m), and 400 (50.30).
Eagle sophomore Elijah Conley (seventh, 3211), freshman Chris Homen (ninth, 3150) and junior Parker Wubbena (10th, 3016), are also competing in the decathlon.
In the heptathlon, EWU sophomore Madelyn Knight sits in eighth place after the first day with 2755 points. Sophomore Hayden McAuliff is 13th with 2536.
The regular portion of the meet begins with field events at 10 a.m. Pacific time on Friday (May 14), with running events starting at 12:30 p.m. The final day of the competition begins at 8:30 a.m. Pacific time, followed by running events at 1 p.m. Preliminaries will take place in running events through the 800 meters, and all other running events and all field events will be run as finals.
As a team, the Eagles are seeking to improve upon their finishes in 2019 when the meet was last held. Eastern's men finished sixth while the women were seventh, but in 2018 the men were fourth and the women sixth.

Thursday, Seattle University's Lucas Milne, Rachel Van Liew & Chloe Deleissegues begin competing in the WESTERN ATHLETIC CONFERENCE decathlon & heptathlon in Edinburgh, Texas at the UT Rio Grande Valley Track & Field Complex. The meet runs through Saturday.
The first event of the decathlon starts at 10 am central time, while the first heptathlon event begins at 10:30 am, central time.
Thursday, the finals of the women's and men's hammer & javelin will be contested, along with the men's pole vault. Thursday's lone track finals are in the women's and men's 10000.
