WEEKEND ROUNDUP: Pasco native Marisa Howard almost attains Olympic standard in season debut...

Here's a recap of what happened on a busy Saturday of track & field among athletes and teams with Washington ties:

HOWARD CLOSES IN ON OLYMPIC STANDARD IN STEEPLE...

In Leavenworth, Kansas, Pasco HS alum Marisa Howard (Paul Merca photo) came dangerously close to the Olympic Games qualifying standard of 9:30.00 at the Trials of Miles Kansas City Qualifier.

Howard, running in her season opener, ran 9:32.75 to win the race by over six seconds ahead of runner-up Aimee Pratt, who ran 9:38.99.

Washington State alum Caroline Austin finished ninth in 10:00.61, as she looked to go under the US Olympic Trials standard of 9:50.00.

In another section of the steeple, Washington alum Baylee Mires, who is making the transition to the event from the 1500, finished second in 10:01.41.

OREGON STATE HI-PERFORMANCE

In Corvallis, former University of Washington javelin thrower Emmy Engle's second place finish in the javelin was the top mark on the day for Eastern Washington at the conclusion of the Oregon State Hi-Performance Meet, hosted by Oregon State University.

Engle threw a personal best 158-3 (48.24m) to finish second and move her up to number 8 on EWU's all-time list.

"I think Emmy Engle's favorite track at this point in the season is definitely the OSU track," said Eastern head coach Marcia Mecklenburg. "She hit a personal record in the first meet of the season at OSU and improved two feet on that mark today. What was even better was that she beat one of the top-ranked competitors in the Big Sky Conference from Montana State. That is definitely going to be a confidence boost as we head into Big Sky."

The Eagle men's 4x100 relay was victorious with a 41.32 time, and consisted of junior Joe Gauthier, freshman Daniel Gaik, junior Dimeji Adekanbi and senior Jonah Mathews. Also victorious for EWU was senior Parker Bowden in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 14.10, well below his school-record effort of 13.87 earlier this season.

Seattle University's Ansel Pendley-Griffin set a new school record in the 800m, as he ran 1:52.72.

The Redhawks got wins from Tricht Jocelyn in the 100 (12.15) to go with Isaiah Payne's win in the men's 200 on Friday.

Western Washington alum Alex Donigian won the men's 100 in 10.58.

RALPH VERNACCHIA INVITATIONAL

In Bellingham, Western Washington's Cordell Cummings and Bryant Welch were double winners at the Ralph Vernacchia Invitational at Civic Stadium.

Cummings won both the 110 (14.53) and the 400 (53.57) hurdles, while Welch took both the 200 (21.99) and 400 (49.05) meter dashes.

Top marks on the day were recorded by Andrew Harris (189-10/57.86m) and Meagan Smallbeck (177-6/54.11m) of Central Washington as the Wildcats took the top spots in the men's and women's hammer.

Western's Jeret Gillingham (9:03.33) and Macauley Franks (9:05.12) went 1-2 in the steeplechase to put themselves inside the top 25 on the NCAA Division II descending order list.

Aliyah Dawkins of Western Washington is inside the D2 top 30 in the high jump, as she cleared a season best 5-6.5 (1.69m), but finished second to Pacific Lutheran's Lauren Wilson at the same height on fewer misses.
