Brian Fay & Kieran Lumb break UW school record in 10000; Maggie Nelson breaks EWU heptathlon record...

RALEIGH, North Carolina--
Washington's Brian Fay and Kieran Lumb (Paul Merca photo) both broke the previous school record in the 10000 meters as day 2 of the adidas Raleigh Relays concluded Friday at the Paul Derr Track & Field Facility on the campus of North Carolina State University.

Fay finished fourth in a time of 28:22.21, and Lumb was ninth in a time of 28:25.93, as both ducked under the old UW school record of 28:31.59 set by Tibebu Proctor at last year's Stanford Invitational.

Proctor ran 29:47.62, while in the second section, Isaac Mohn ran 29:45.50.

Anna Gibson and Victoria Gersch had the best placings on the track Friday, as Gibson finished second in the 1500 in a personal best 4:13.31. That mark puts Gibson eight on the Washington all-time list.

Gersch ran 54.66 in the 400 meters to place third overall, and eighth on the UW's all time list.

The Huskies got solid performances in the steeplechase from Joe Waskom (8:47.93) in 6th, and Sam Affolder (8:49.54) in ninth.

On the straightaway, All-American multi-event specialist Ida Eikeng was fifth in the 100 hurdles in 13.56, and finished seventh in the high jump at 5-7 (1.70m).

Freshman Anthony Smith moved to ninth on the UW all-time list in the 100, where he ran 10.47 to finish 11th overall.

Beatrice Asomaning (158-2/48.21m) and Nolan Such (165-0/50.23m) both finished ninth in the women's and men's discus.

The meet concludes Saturday with action in both relays, the 800, the 200 and the 400 hurdles on the track and the hammers and long jumps on the field.

In Spokane, Eastern Washington's Maggie Nelson (Paul Merca photo) won both the long jump and the javelin, and finished second in the 800 to emerge as the overall winner in the heptathlon and obliterate the school record in that event on the final day of competition at the Buc Scoring Invitational Friday at the Pine Bowl on the campus of Whitworth University.

Nelson compiled a final score of 5130, breaking the old mark of 4857 set by Kendra Hamm in 2017, and became the first in school history to crack the 5000 point barrier.

Nelson, who was third after day 1, got day two started by jumping 18-3.25 (5.57m), and throwing the javelin 158-8 (48.37m), before finishing the day with a time of 2:29.44 in the 800.

Pending the outcome of other meets around the country this weekend, her score puts her for the time being in the top 25 in Division I (the top 14 finishers in the Texas Relays heptathlon scored 5172 points or better).

Washington State's Peyton Teevens was second with a final score of 4957, while first day leader Valerie Schmidt of Corban was third at 4872.

Eastern Washington's Chris Homen won the decathlon with a final score of 6006 points.

Washington State earned wins in both 4 x 100 relays, and got individual victories from Skyler Walton in the women's 100 (11.76), De'Antae Choates in the men's 400 (49.58), Elena Willems in the women's 800 (2:11.92), Ronald Grueso Mosqquera (177-5/54.09m) and Audrey Hughes (151-0/46.03m) in the discus; Carolina Ulloa-Daza in the women's hammer (183-11/56.06m), and Lucas Tailin (14-10/4.52m) and Emily Coombs (12-10.5/3.92m) in the pole vaults.
