Katie Burnett finishes 40th in 20K at World Athletics Race Walking Team champs in Muscat...

In Muscat, Oman, Bellevue native Katie Burnett (photo courtesy Getty Images for World Athletics) finished 40th in the 20 kilometer walk on day 1 of the World Athletics Race Walking Team Championships Friday.

Competing in muggy conditions where the temperature at the beginning of the women’s 20 km event hovered around the 80-degree mark with 60 percent humidity, Burnett, who won the 20K world team trials last month in El Cajon, California in 1:44:03, could not replicate her time in the conditions.

Burnett started in the low 40s at 5k, splitting 26:09, then dropped to 43rd at the 10k, crossing the halfway mark in 54:40 (28:31).

She went through 15k at 1:25:23 (30:43), before finishing in 1:56:02 (30:39).

The top American was Robyn Stevens, who finished 37th in 1:49:14.

Ma Zhenxia of China won the race in 1:30:32.

Saturday, Vancouver native Daniel Nehnevaj competes in the men's 35 K race.

Complete day 1 results are available here.

On the track, the 2022 outdoor season opens in the state of Washington Saturday as a small group of athletes from Western Washington will head south to Tacoma to compete in the Ed Boitano Invitational at Baker Stadium on the campus of the University of Puget Sound, starting at 11 am.

The hammer and 10000 were contested Friday afternoon.

While many of the schools in attendance had somewhat of an indoor season this winter, the Boitano meet has historically drawn attention from a national perspective because of its reputation in the javelin.

Jaydon Tryon and Sean Witters, who finished fourth and fifth in the javelin at the GNAC championships last year for the Vikings, are among those entered in the mens field, while Amanda Short, who was third in the conference championship meet is in the women's field. Taliah Coe, who was sixth at GNACs, is only entered in the discus.

The University of Puget Sound's release previewing the meet is here, while Western Washington's release is available here.

Live results will be available here.
