Huskies with strong first day in Raleigh; Eagles 1-3 in decathlon after day 1 at Whitworth...

RALEIGH, North Carolina--UW outdoor 5000 meter school record holder Isaac Green (Paul Merca photo), shot putter Makayla Kelby, and multi-event specialist Ida Eikeng highlighted Washington's day one performances at the adidas Raleigh Relays at the Paul Derr Track & Field Facility on the campus of North Carolina State University Thursday.

Green, who finished 12th at last year's NCAA championships in the 5000, opened his outdoor campaign by finishing third overall in the fastest section of the race, running 13:40.20, as Christian Noble of Division II Lee (Tennessee) won in a meet and facility record 13:24.78.

Spokane native John Dressel, now competing for Puma Elite, finished eighth in 13:46.27.

In the prior heat, UW's indoor DMR All-American Luke Houser won his 5,000-meter outdoor debut in 13:48.48, closing with an impressive 57.75-second final 400-meters.

Kelby was third overall in the shot put as she went 52-6.5 (16.01m) to get into West Prelim qualifying position right off the bat.

While there were questions about the marking after the competition, heptathlon All-American Ida Eikeng was credited with a throw of 182-3 (55.56m) to finish second. Assuming the mark is correct, it would be a new school record, eclipsing the old record of 174-2 (53.08m) set by Amanda Peterson in 2011.

Eikeng's previous personal best was 171-1 (52.16m).

In the men's javelin, Roan Allen a transfer from the University of British Columbia, rifled the spear 212-5 (64.75m) to take eighth.

The open women's pole vault saw Delaney Ezeji-Okoye and Ashleigh Helms each clear 12-9.5 (3.90m), with Ezeji-Okoye getting the win and Helms second on fewer misses.

The meet continues Friday all day and concludes Saturday. A live stream of the meet is available on ESPN3.

In Spokane, Eastern Washington's Elijah Conley, Quintin Porterfield, and Chris Homen hold the top three spots in the decathlon after the first day of competition at the Buc Scoring Invitational Thursday at the Pine Bowl on the campus of Whitworth University.

Conley and Porterfield are tied with 3314 points at the break, with Homen down 39 points at 3275.

Conley earned a victory in the shot put, throwing 41-11.25 (12.78m), while Porterfield won the 400 in 50.86 to conclude day 1.

In the heptathlon, Maggie Nelson of the Eagles stands third with 2881 points, as Valerie Schmidt of Corban (3026) and Washington State's Peyton Teevens (2950) are first and second at the break.

Teevens won the high jump at 5-4.5 (1.63m), while Nelson won the shot put at 40-1.5 (12.23m).

US Olympic Trials finalist and Washington State alum Brock Eager won the hammer with a throw of 222-1 (67.69m), while current Cougar Carolina Ulloa-Daza led a WSU 1-5 sweep of the hammer, throwing 183-11 (56.06m) for the win.
