Viking men's squad moves up two spots in latest USTFCCCA D2 national XC poll...
NEW ORLEANS--After their victory at last Saturday's Bill Roe WWU Classic, the Western Washington men's cross country team (WWU Athletics photo) moved up two spots in the USTFCCCA Division II national coaches poll released Wednesday.
The Vikings moved from number 16 to 14 after a win at their Bill Roe WWU Classic in which they placed three runners inside the top six, and all five of their scorers placing 13th or higher.
Joining the Vikings, who were previously the only team from the Great Northwest Athletic Conference in the national poll for the first time this season is Northwest Nazarene, which was voted by the coaches as the number 17 team in the country.
The Nighthawks came off a strong second place finish at last week's Mike Johnson Classic in Monmouth, Oregon, finishing behind number 7 Chico State.
Northwest Nazarene's Brody Kemble (23:41), Grady Mylander (23:41), and Ian Stockett (23:55) went 1-2-3, but didn't have the depth to overcome Chico State, which packed all five scorers inside the top ten to win by a 34-40 count.
The nation's top five men's teams are in order: Wingate, Colorado School of Mines, Adams State, Grand Valley State, and Lee (Tenn.).
No schools from the Great Northwest Athletic Conference made the national top 30 in the women's poll.
Colorado School of Mines, West Texas A&M, Grand Valley State, Adams State and Wingate are the top five women's teams in D2.
