Wildcats tenth and eleventh at Bill Dellinger Invitational against D1 fields...

SPRINGFIELD, Oregon--
Competing against a field of all Division I schools, the Central Washington cross country teams finished tenth and eleventh at the Bill Dellinger Invitational Friday morning at the Pine Ridge Golf Club.

In the opening men's 8k, number 14 Oregon romped to an easy team victory, scoring 16 points to easily outdistance number 23 Air Force, who scored 50 points.

Ben Balazs led Oregon to victory, running 23:09, as the Ducks put all their scorers in the top six.

Luke Hurd (Paul Merca file photo) led the way for Central Washington in 55th in 25:08. Kellen McInelly was 62nd in 25:23, followed by Charlie Naught in 78th in 25:58.

Dima Serafimovici was 79th in 26:09, and Max Hutton was two places behind in 26:14. The Wildcats had a 1-5 spread of 66 seconds, and a final score of 281 points.

In the women's race, it was more of the same, as the number 4 ranked Ducks sailed to a 16-72 victory over second place Air Force.

Diana Cherotich led the way for Oregon, winning in a new course record of 18:59. Like the men, the Ducks put their five scorers in the top six.

Freshman Madeline Harrison was Central's first runner across in 58th place in 21:55. followed by GNAC 10000m scorer Payton Conover in 73rd in 22:18. Lillian Neff was 88th in 22:48.

Hannah Pidduck was 94th in 22:55, and Araceli Esquivel rounded out Central's scorers in 23:01. The Wildcats had a 1-5 split of 66 seconds.


WIL LAIRD & ACER IVERSON TO RUN IN IZUMO EKIDEN...


Washington alums Wil Laird and Acer Iverson (Paul Merca photo) will be in Japan as part of an Ivy League select team running in the Izumo Ekiden Monday in Izumo City, Japan.

Laird, who competed for Yale, and Iverson, who competed for Harvard before attending grad school and completing their athletic eligibility at the University of Washington (Ivy League schools do not allow redshirt or fifth year eligibility), will run in the six-man ekiden relay of 45.1 kilometers that consists of legs from 8km, 5.8km, 8.5km, 6.2km, 6.4km, and 10.2km.

The big name on the Ivy Ekiden team is Paris Olympian and world championships competitor Graham Blanks of Harvard.  Blanks was a two time NCAA cross country champion while at Harvard. Last month, Blanks was 11th in the 10000 at the world championships in Tokyo.

The race is set for Monday, which coincides with Japan's National Sports Day. The Ivy League Select team competes against a number of Japanese university teams. The Izumo Ekiden is one of the three major university Ekidens contested in the fall and winter months in Japan.
