In Fontvieille, Monaco on Friday, Washington State alum CJ Allen (Paul Merca photo), who is sharpening up for next month's world championships in Budapest, finished third in the 400 hurdles at the Herculis Meeting International d'Athlétisme, the ninth stop on the Wanda Diamond League tour that ends in September in Eugene.
Competing in his first race since finishing second at the Toyota USATF Championships on July 9th, Allen ran 47.84, as he finished behind Olympic champion Karsten Warholm of Norway, who ran a world leading time of 46.51, and defending world champion Alison dos Santos of Brazil, who ran 47.66 in his season debut after surgery on his right knee in February.
Allen was able to hold off Loudly Vaillant of France who finished fourth in 47.85.

MOLL NO-HEIGHTS AT NACAC U-23 CHAMPIONSHIPS...
In San Jose, Costa Rica, Capital HS/Olympia graduate Hana Moll, the reigning world under-20 champion, failed to clear a height in the pole vault at the NACAC Under-23 Championships Friday morning.
Moll entered the competition at 13-11.25 (4.25m) and missed all three attempts.
US teammate Sydney Horn from High Point University won the competition with a meet record 14-5.5 (4.41m).
Walla Walla native Dash Sirmon of the University of Nebraska goes in the men's U23 javelin Saturday morning at 8 am local time (7 am Seattle time).
BEASTS HEAD TO LA FOR UNDER ARMOUR SUNSET TOUR...
Several members of the Seattle based Brooks Beasts head to Los Angeles to compete in Saturday's Under Armour Sunset Tour at Jack Kemp Stadium on the campus of Occidental College.
Isaiah Harris, who finished second in the 800 meters, but who doesn't have the world championship standard of 1:44.70, is currently ranked 26th in the Road to Budapest standings in the men's 800, and is comfortably in position to go to worlds, barring a major shuffling in the rankings.
However, Harris is looking to remove that uncertainty by going under the standard Saturday night.
Teammate Devin Dixon is also entered in the race, as is former UW volunteer coach Amos Bartelsmeyer.
In the men's 1500, Henry Wynne and Dillon Maggard of the Beasts are entered, as is 2016 Olympic champ and former UW volunteer coach Matthew Centrowitz, and two-time world championship team member Johnny Gregorek.
Marta Pen Freitas, who is in the world rankings quota at number 40 in the women's 1500, also is looking to solidify her position going into the world championships. She'll be joined by teammate Allie Buchalski, who is dropping down in distance.
Seattle resident Tom Anderson is entered in the men's 5000, while Washington grad Kayley DeLay goes in the women's 5000.
Media partner RunnerSpace.com ($) will stream the meet beginning at 7 pm Pacific time.
