WEEKEND ROUNDUP: Lumb makes Diamond League debut; O'Sullivan double winner at Irish U23s...
Sunday in Stockholm, Washington alum Kieran Lumb (photo courtesy Wanda Diamond League) competed in his first Wanda Diamond League meet, running in the men's 3000 meters at the Bauhaus Galan meeting under persistent rainy conditions at Olympic Stadium.
Lumb, a native of Vancouver, BC, finished eighth in a personal best 7:43.81, as Sweden's Emil Danielsson won in 7:39.70.
The men's 3000 at the Bauhaus Galan was a non scoring event, so no Diamond League points were awarded in that race.
With this coming weekend national championship weekend in many countries, including the United States, the Wanda Diamond League will be paused. The next Diamond League meet happens on July 16th in Silesia, Poland.
In Tullamore, Ireland, Washington's Sophie O'Sullivan was a double winner at the Athletics Ireland national under-23 championships on Sunday.
O’Sullivan, who recently ran for Ireland at the European Team Championships-Third Division meet in Poland collected the first of her two gold medals in the women’s 800m (2.10.04).
She returned to the track a few hours later and won the women's 1500m race in 4:27.02.
O’Sullivan, who competed at the NCAA championship in Austin last month for the Huskies, will now turn her attention to the upcoming European U23 Championships in Espoo, Finland (July 13 – 16).
In slightly cool Edmonton, Alberta, Rainier HS grad Jeremiah Nubbe finished sixth in the hammer at the Edmonton Athletics Invitational at Foote Field Sunday.
Nubbe, an NCAA qualifier as a freshman at the University of Texas, threw a best of 217-8 (66.34m), as recent University of Arizona grad Jordan Geist won with a best of 246-10 (75.25m).
