Huskies' Bruno Comin Pescador wins second Spanish national decathlon title...

TORRENT, Spain--
The University of Washington's Bruno Comin Pescador (photo courtesy UW Athletics) won his second national senior title Saturday in the decathlon at the Spanish national championships at Pista Parc Central just outside Valencia.

Comin Pescador, who started the day in second with 4155 points, began day two by running the 110 hurdles in 14.77.

He won the discus with a throw of 143-3 (43.66m), then vaulted a best of 15-1 (4.60m).

Comin Pescador proceeded to throw a decathlon personal best in the javelin of 184-7 (56.27m) to find himself with a 20-point lead over day one overall leader Jorge Davila, 7244 to 7224 going into the 1500.

Davila entered the meet with a 4:31.20 personal best to Comin Pescador's 4:35.77. To win the national title, Comin Pescador needed to stay within 2 seconds of Davila.

In the 1500, Davila ran 4:31.33, with Comin Pescador right behind him in a personal best of 4:31.48.

Davila only managed to gain one point, as Comin Pescador took the Spanish national title with a final score of 7979 to Davila's 7960.

The mark is the fourth best score in UW history, behind only Mike Ramos (8322), Jeremy Taiwo (8239) & Steve Erickson (8063).


OTHER NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS AND SIGNIFICANT COMPETITIONS...

In Dublin, Ireland, Washington's Sophie O'Sullivan easily won her semifinal in the women's 1500 at the Athletics Ireland national championships, running 4:43.06 to advance to Sunday's final at 8:10 pm local time (12:10 pm in Seattle).

Recent UW grad Brian Fay runs in the finals of the men's 5000 Sunday at 6:05 pm local time (10:05 am in Seattle).


In Birmingham, England, Washington grad Ed Trippas made a last ditch effort to raise his world ranking score by running the 2000 steeplechase at the British Milers Club meet Saturday.

Trippas finished third with a time of 5:26.93 in the World Athletics Challenger (group D) series meet. The time netted him a score of 1135 world rankings points plus 30 placing points, for a total of 1165. The score raised his three-race average from 1163 to 1173 points, but short of the projected point total of 1189 points in the Road to Budapest rankings to get into the world championships.


In Langley, British Columbia,  recent Washington grads Kieran Lumb and Aaron Ahl went 1-3 in their heat of the men's 1500 at the Bell Canadian Track & Field championships Saturday.

Lumb took the win in 3:46.87, while Ahl was third in 3:47.22 to advance to Sunday's finals at 12:04 pm.

In the women's 1500, Madison Heisterman of the Huskies was sixth in her heat in 4:17.94 to advance to Sunday's finals at 12:16 pm.

On Thursday, Rainier HS graduate and University of Texas rising sophomore Jeremiah Nubbe finished second in the men's discus with a throw of 188-0 (57.32m), behind Youssef Koudssi who competes collegiately at the University of Arizona, as Koudssi spun the disc 191-10 (58.47m).

Nubbe finished fifth in the hammer Saturday with a throw of 212-1 (64.66m).

Washington State's Jasneet Nijjar was fourth in her heat of the women's 400 in 54.45 on Friday.

Sunday, Washington grad Roan Allen competes in the finals of the men's javelin at noon.

The final day of competition at the Bell Canadian championships will be streamed live on media partner RunnerSpace ($) starting at 8:45 am.
