Ex-UW head coach Greg Metcalf returns as men's XC/distance coach at University of Texas...

AUSTIN, Texas--
The tweet said it all.

With one tweet, the University of Texas announced Monday that former University of Washington men's and women's head coach Greg Metcalf (Paul Merca photo) will return to coaching after a four year absence as the men's cross country and distance coach for the Longhorns.

The UW alum and Ephrata native was the head men's and women's coach for the Huskies from 2002 until the school parted ways from him after the 2018 Pac-12 championships at Stanford, after an article in the UW Daily revealed an unhealthy culture within the team's distance runners concerning weight and eating habits.

He also had a run-in with several distance runners in the 2014-15 academic year, which led to a number of athletes transferring to other schools after they felt UW athletic department officials didn't properly address their grievances against Metcalf.

From 2015 to 2016, Washington put together one of its best seasons in recent memory. The Huskies won their first West Regional men's cross country title in program history in fall 2015, and Metcalf won Pac-12 coach of the year during the 2016 track season. Metcalf remained in his role as head coach after the season.

His greatest success as leader of the Washington program came in the 2008 cross country season, when the Huskies won the NCAA women's title, giving the Dawgs its first national championship.

After his departure from the UW, Metcalf stayed in the sport as the NCAA account manager for Beynon Sports, which sells and manufactures track surfaces used at several notable sites around the country, including Husky Track, Hayward Field, and The Podium in Spokane.

Metcalf will work with a Texas staff led by head coach Edrick Floreal, who formerly coached at Stanford and Kentucky.  Metcalf replaces Pete Watson, who was named program director and head men's and women's coach at Boston College.

WINGER'S FAREWELL TOUR CONTINUES IN LUZERN...

Vancouver native Kara Winger's farewell tour continues Tuesday night at the Spitzen Leichathletik meeting in Luzern, Switzerland.

Despite winning the NACAC javelin title with a meet record and season best 212-2 (64.68m) and surpassing the qualifying standard for next year's world championships in Budapest, she insists that she's not changing her mind and competing beyond this season.

Winger will face a field that includes fellow US Olympian Ariana Ince, and good friend and Canadian Olympian Liz Gleadle.
