Winger finishes fourth in Silesia Diamond League meet Saturday...


SILESIA, Poland--
In her first competition outside North America this season, world championships silver medalist Kara Winger (Paul Merca photo) finished fourth at the Kamila Skolimowska Memorial meeting Saturday, the ninth stop on the Wanda Diamond League tour.

On the day, the Vancouver native, competing in her final season at the world class level, had a best of 202-7 (61.75m), which she threw in the third round.

In the Diamond League format, she did not advance to the sixth round for a final throw.

Eugene bronze medalist Haruka Kitaguchi took the victory in the final round, throwing 213-7 (65.10m).

In the men's 400 hurdles, Washington State alum CJ Allen finished sixth in 49.01, as world champion Alison dos Santos of Brazil continued his hot streak, running a meet record 47.80.

Olympia native Brooke Feldmeier didn't finish the women's 800 after waking up with an undisclosed illness.

The Wanda Diamond League tour moves on to Monaco for the Herculis meeting on August 10th before it takes a small break for the regional championship meets.

In perhaps one of the deepest 1500 meter races in recent memory, former Husky Sam Tanner (Paul Merca photo) of New Zealand finished sixth in a personal best 3:31.34, while Josh Kerr of Scotland and the Seattle based Brooks Beasts was twelfth in 3:35.72 on the penultimate day of the Commonwealth Games at Alexander Stadium in Birmingham, England.

Former Wisconsin All-American Ollie Hoare of Australia overtook former world champion Timothy Cheruiyot of Kenya to win the race in a Commonwealth Games meet record of 3:30.12, breaking the long standing meet record of 3;32.16 held by the great Filbert Bayi of Tanzania in 1974.

Such was the depth of the race that six men, including Tanner, ducked under Bayi's mark.

Incoming UW grad student Ed Trippas of Australia finished seventh in the 3000 steeplechase.

Trippas, who competed at the world championships in Eugene, ran 8:37.42, as Kenya's Abraham Kibiwot won in 8:11.15.

Sunday, Washington alums Amy-Eloise Markovc of England and Izzi Batt-Doyle of Australia compete in the women's 5000 meters to close the meet.

On the final day of competition at the World Athletics Under-20 Championships in Cali, Colombia, Seattle Prep standout Will (Tyler) Floyd anchored Canada to a third place finish in the men's 4 x 400 relay at Pascal Guerrero Olympic Stadium. 

Floyd's split 45.93 on the anchor, as the Canadians ran 3:06.50 to set a national under-20 record.

The United States won the race in a time of 3:04.47, followed by Jamaica in 3:05.72.
