Woodruff finishes third in 400 hurdles, and Winger fourth in javelin at Monaco DL meet...

FONTVIEILLE, Monaco--
University of Washington alum Gianna Woodruff (Paul Merca photo) finished third in the 400 hurdles Wednesday night at the Herculis Meeting International d'Athletisme, the tenth stop on the Wanda Diamond League tour.

Woodruff ran 54.13, her second fastest time this season, as Rushell Clayton of Jamaica, who was sixth at the world championships in Eugene last month, took the win in a personal best 53.33.

Vancouver native Kara Winger finished fourth in the javelin with a best of 199-11 (60.95m) in round 2.

Kelsey-Lee Barber of Australia won the event with a throw of 211-7 (64.50m) in the third round.

Former Husky Sam Tanner, fresh off a personal best at the Commonwealth Games, was one of the pacesetters in the fastest 3000m race of the season, as he took the field through 1500 at 3:40 before ceding the front with three laps to go.

Thierry Ndikumwenayo of Burundi chased down Behiru Aregawi in the last 200 to win in a world leading time and personal best of 7:25.93, with Aregawi second at a personal best 7:26.81.

Grant Fisher of the Beaverton based Nike Bowerman Track Club was third in an American record 7:28.48.

After the Herculis meet, Woodruff is eighth in the Diamond League standings in the 400 hurdles with 10 points, while Winger is seventh in the javelin with 10 points.

The Wanda Diamond League tour pauses for the European and NACAC Championships next weekend before resuming in Lausanne, Switzerland on August 26th.
