Dan Bell's 1987 UW school record in the steeplechase finally falls...

STANFORD, California--
Washington grad transfer Ed Trippas (UW Athletics photo), an Australian Olympian and world championships team member, broke the oldest track distance record in school history in winning the 3000 steeplechase at the Payton Jordan Invitational hosted by Stanford University Friday night.

Portland State's Jordan Macintosh did the early work for the field through the first part of the race, before Trippas, who transferred to the UW from Princeton, took command, with Oklahoma State's Victor Shitsama and Washington alum Julius Diehr in pursuit.

Trippas had almost a two second lead going into the last lap, but hung on to win in 8:31.40, with Shitsama second at 8:31.50, and Diehr third in 8:38.46.

Trippas took down the UW school record of 8:32.27, set in 1987 by Dan Bell.

Trippas' mark also meant that every Washington men's school record from 1500 meters on up has been set in either the 2022 or 2023 season.

Gonzaga's Cullen McEachern won section 2 of the men's steeplechase in 8:48.49, while teammate Cooper Laird was third in 8:55.48, and Jaxon Mackie was fifth in 9:02.41.

In the women's 5000, the Huskies' Kayley DeLay was tenth in the top section, running 15:58.15, while Gonzaga's Kristen Garcia was 17th in 16:33.04, just ahead of the Huskies' Andrea Markezich in 16:41.73.

In the other section of the women's 5000, UW grad Haley Herberg was sixth in 16:21.20, with freshmen Sophia Nordenholz seventh at 16:24.02, and Ella Borsheim eighth in 16:31.09.

The top section of the men's 5000 saw Gonzaga's James Mwaura finish eighth in 13:32.89, and UW's Aidan Ryan 21st in 14:10.83. Leo Daschbach of UW was ninth in section 2 in 14:15.41.

Gonzaga's Kyle Radosevich finished tenth in the men's 10000 late Friday night,  running 29:26.15.
