Seattle Pacific distance coach Chris Reed to step down at end of current season...
SEATTLE--Seattle Pacific associate head track & field and cross country coach Chris Reed (SPU Athletics photo) announced that he will step down following the end of the current track season.
Reed, a 2011 graduate from Western Oregon in Economics, is following his wife Annie to Portland, where she recently started a job with a company that specializes in running footwear.
Reed and SPU head coach / program director Karl Lerum have helped keep the Falcons at or near the top of the track and cross country ladder in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference. During their decade together, the Falcons won three GNAC indoor women's team titles outright, shared one with Central Washington, and captured five outdoor team titles. The women's cross country team raced in three national meets, most recently in 2019.
In a statement on the Seattle Pacific web site, Lerum said, "He has impacted so many student-athletes and colleagues in a positive way during his time here. He'll obviously be missed."
"I've long since stopped thinking of Chris as my assistant. We're colleagues that have done the best we could during the time we had together here."
Reed hasn't limited his efforts to just coaching. He also has served as the director of the Falcon Running Camp, has been the West Region women's cross country ranker for the USTFCCCA over the last eight seasons, is currently is president of the Division II Cross Country Executive Committee, and is part of NCAA Division II Coaches Connection program.
He played a major part in the staging of last December's NCAA Division II cross country championships at Chambers Creek Regional Park in University Place.
CONFERENCE HONORS FOR BRIAN FAY & DREW WEBER...
In its weekly release, the Pac-12 Conference and the Great Northwest Athletic Conference named Brian Fay of the University of Washington and Drew Weber of Western Washington as its men's track athlete of the week for the previous week.
Fay ran his first full outdoor race of the season Friday night in Azusa, at the Bryan Clay Invitational and pulled away from an elite field to win in 13:21.99, which stands as the fastest time in the NCAA this season by more than four seconds over the number two mark. The Dublin, Ireland native now holds the three-fastest 5k times ever run by a Husky.
This marks Fay's third career Pac-12 athlete of the week honor.
Also competing at last week's Bryan Clay meet at Azusa Pacific, Weber set two personal bests over 800 and 1500 meters along with recording NCAA Division II provisional marks.
The sophomore broke his own school record in the 800m in 1:49.34, the number 6 mark in GNAC history and eighth in NCAA Division II this season.
In the 1500m race, Weber's time of 3:44.83 remained third in WWU history, and number 6 in Division II this season.
This marks the third GNAC Track Athlete of the Week award for Weber in his career and second this season.
