WEEKEND ROUNDUP: UW's Elijah Mason joins 200-foot discus club...

Here's a recap of what happened over the weekend:

MASON JOINS THE 200-FOOT CLUB IN SAN DIEGO

In San Diego, Washington senior Elijah Mason (Paul Merca photo) broke 200 feet in the discus for the first time in his career as the Husky throws group competed at the Triton Invitational Saturday.

Competing against primarily a post-collegiate field, Mason threw 201-7 (61.44m) to finish eighth, as Tokyo Olympian Sam Mattis won with a throw of 221-5 (67.49m). That throw puts Mason seventh on the NCAA D1 descending order list and number 6 in school history.

In the women's shot put, MaKayla Kelby and Kaia Tupu-South in the women's shot put. Kelby had an outdoor season-best of 55-7.5 (16.95m), just a couple inches off her own school record, while Tupu-South threw 53-7.75 (16.35m), improving her number 3 mark in school history. 

Zhang Linru of China won at 60-8.75 (18.51m).

Jayden White was third in the hammer and the top collegian in the field, throwing 214-7 (65.41m), as Mexico's Diego Del Alan Real won at 240-11 (73.45m). Chandler Ault was the top collegian in the mens javelin, as the Princeton transfer was fourth at 220-10 (67.32m). David Carreon of Mexico won at 241-4 (73.57m).

In Friday's opening session, MaKayla Kelby was twelfth in the discus with a best of 174-2 (53.09m), as Tokyo Olympic champ Valarie Allman won at 230-5 (70.25m).


COUGS, EAGS & WILDCATS BATTLE ELEMENTS IN SPOKANE AT WHITWORTH PEACE MEET...

On Friday (7 April), Washington State, Eastern Washington, Gonzaga, and Central Washington battled through wet conditions at Boppel Track at the Whitworth Peace Meet at the Pine Bowl in Spokane.

Eastern Washington posted ten wins on the day, while Washington State earned six wins, and Central Washington earned two wins.

Best marks on the day came from Ronald Grueso Mosqquera of Washington State, who won the discus at 166-7 (50.78m), and a double victory from Madelyn Knight of Eastern Washington in the 100 and 400 hurdles, winning the short race in 14.36, and the long hurdles in 62.01.


VIKINGS GET A DOZEN IN BURNABY AT EMILIE MONDOR INVITATIONAL...

On Saturday, Western Washington made the short drive across the Canadian border and earned a dozen wins at the Emilie Mondor Invitational, hosted by Simon Fraser University in Burnaby, British Columbia.

WWU top-10 program times were achieved by sophomore Mia Crocker in the 800m (No. 6, 2:13.26), freshman Ashley Reeck in the 3,000m steeplechase (No. 7, 11:05.35) and freshman Mara Parksin the shot put (12.68m/41-7.25). 


SPU'S ISAIAH ARCHER BREAKS SCHOOL RECORD IN 400 METERS...

While a group of Seattle Pacific athletes went to Burnaby, the majority flew to California to compete in the Pomona-Pitzer Invitational Saturday in Claremont.

Falcon sophomore Isaiah Archer took the victory in the men's 400 in 48.24, breaking a 17-year-old mark of 48.27 that Chris Randolph set in 2006.

Later that afternoon, he teamed with Julius Shepherd, Evan Carpenter, and Jeff Gordon carrying the baton ahead of him, they beat the old school record of 3:21.25 that had stood for 20 years, since 2003 as the quartet clocked 3:20.86 to take third.

Horizontal jumper David Njeri went a season-best 49-7.25 (15.12m) to win the triple jump. That came on the heels of a 22-6.25 (6.86m) performance to win the long jump.


CASTENS WINS 1500 AT JOHN KNIGHT TWILIGHT...

In Monmouth, Oregon, NCAA cross country qualifier Alauna Carstens of Saint Martin's got the Saints their lone win, taking the women's 1500 at the John Knight Twilight meet hosted by Western Oregon University Friday night.

Carstens ran 4:46.74 to win by just over six seconds.
