WWU's Matty Lagerway takes 2nd in GNAC heptathlon; Central's Drew Klein 3rd in decathlon...

NAMPA, Idaho--
Western Washington's Matty Lagerway (WWU Athletics photo) finished second in the heptathlon at the Great Northwest Athletic Conference Combined Events championships at Bohner Track on the campus of Northwest Nazarene University.

Lagerway earned her second silver medal of 2023 in the multis, placing second in the heptathlon with a personal-best 4495 points. Lagerwey also placed second in the pentathlon at the GNAC Indoor Championships in February.

She started the day in third at the break with 2762 points, 97 points behind first day leader Jenelle Hurley of Western Oregon, but worked her way up to the runner up position by long jumping 16-5.25 (5.01m), throwing the javelin 115-2 (35.11m), and finishing the day with a time of 2:37.89 in the 800.

Ellie DeGroot of Central Washington and Hannah Chang of Seattle Pacific tied for fourth with 4253 points, and Nicole Avery of Western Washington finished eighth with 4125 points.

Jenelle Hurley of Western Oregon won the heptathlon with 4803 points.
 
In the decathlon, Central Washington's Drew Klein finished third with a two day score of 6535 points.

Klein started the day in eighth place with 3246 points, then started off by running 15.70 in the 110 hurdles.

He finished second in the discus with a throw of 122-1 (37.23m), then was third in the pole vault with a clearance of 14-7.5 (4.46m).

In the javelin, he threw 171-2 (52.18m) to finish second, before ending the day with a third place finish in the 1500 in 5:02.05.

Andrew Boyd of Saint Martin's finished fourth with 6184 points, while Western Washington's Ryan Kenny and Austin Seals were seventh with 6056 and 5546 points, respectively.

Steven Schmidt of Northwest Nazarene repeated as conference decathlon champion with a final score of 7047 points.

The Great Northwest Athletic Conference championship meet is May 12-13 at Western Oregon University in Monmouth.
