Gonzaga's Wil Smith sets meet record at Oregon Twilight; Pair of pro meets on tap Saturday...

Gonzaga's Wil Smith (Gonzaga Athletics photo) set a meet record in the men's 5000 to highlight Gonzaga's performance at the Oregon Twilight meet Friday night at Historic Hayward Field on the campus of the University of Oregon.

Smith surged ahead to beat out all other competitors by more than two seconds with a 13:43.30 time that shattered the previous meet record of 14:08.89. 

In the men's steeple, Cooper Laird finished third overall with a 8:54.69 time, and Jaxon Mackie followed with a seventh-place finish (9:11.46). 

Riley Moore and Kyle Radosevich rounded out the Zags' outing in the B section of the 5000, placing sixth and eighth respectively. Moore crossed the finish line in 14:17.10, with Radosevich finishing in 14:26.80.

The domestic pro circuit kicks into high gear Saturday as there are two more pro meets on the docket.

In Atlanta, the adidas Atlanta City Games takes place on the streets surrounding Centennial Olympic  Park in the first major pro level meet in the city since the 1996 Olympics.

Washington volunteer coach Sam Prakel, who won the USATF road mile title at the Drake Relays last week, is entered in the men's road mile, where he'll race against Washington State alum Paul Ryan, Drew Hunter, and Hobbs Kessler.

UW alum Olivia Gruver is entered in the women's pole vault where she'll face Canada's Anicka Newell.



In Walnut, California, the On Track Fest gets underway at 6 PM at Hilmer Lodge Stadium on the campus of Mt. San Antonio College.

In the women's 1500s, (number in parentheses indicate what heat they're entered in; subject to change), Nia Akins (3) of the Brooks Beasts, Seattle resident Rebecca Mehra (1) and UW volunteer coach Alli Cash (1) are entered.

The men's 1500 has Seattle resident David Timlin (3), WSU grad Colton Johnsen (2), current Coug Zach Stallings (2), UW grad Kieran Lumb (1), current Husky Brian Fay (1), and the Brooks Beasts' Henry Wynne (1) in the field.

Marta Pen Freitas of the Brooks Beasts makes a rare appearance in the second section of the women's 5000, while Seattle resident Tom Anderson and incoming UW freshman Tyrone Gorze from Oregon's Crater HS are in the second section of the men's 5000.

Devin Dixon (2), Isaiah Harris (1) and Laurie Barton (1) of the Brooks Beasts are all entered in the men's and women's 800s.

WSU alum Caroline Austin is entered in the women's steeplechase, while Pasco native Marisa Howard makes her return to the event after going on maternity leave last season. Washington alum Julius Diehr is entered in the mens steeple.

Finally, Allie Buchalski of the Brooks Beasts is entered in the women's 10000.



In what's a final tuneup for next week's Great Northwest Athletic Conference championships in Monmouth, Oregon, a small number of athletes from Central Washington, Western Washington, and Seattle Pacific are entered in Saturday's Portland Twilight at Griswold Stadium on the campus of Lewis & Clark College.

All three schools also have entries in Saturday's Linfield Open in McMinnville.
