Pac-12 pole vault co-champs Campbell & Borton advance to NCAAs...
SACRAMENTO--As day 2 of the NCAA Division I Men's and Women's Outdoor Track & Field preliminary round concluded at Hornet Stadium on the campus of Sacramento State University Thursday night, collegiate leader Nastassja Campbell (UW Athletics photo) of Washington locked up a trip to Austin Thursday night with a first attempt clearance of 13-10 (4.22m) in the pole vault.
Campbell, the Pac-12 pole vault co-champ with teammate Sara Borton, finished in a three-way tie for first with Marleen Mulla of South Dakota, and former teammate Kaitlyn Banas of Arkansas.
Borton needed a second attempt at 13-10 (4.22m) to clinch a spot to nationals.
The Huskies' Ashleigh Helms and Sarah Ferguson both finished at 13-0.25 (3.97m).
Eastern Washington's Savannah Schultz bowed out after clearing the opening height of 12-6.25 (3.82m), while teammate Hally Ruff missed all three tries at the opener.
It was a close call for Washington sophomore Kaia Tupu-South, as she finished 13th in the shot put with a school record 56-2.5 (17.13m), but missed out as Rice's Erna Gunnarsdottir had the same mark, but had a better second throw of 55-3.5 (16.85m) to Tupu-South's 54-5.25 (16.59m).
Teammate MaKayla Kelby was 17th at 54-6.75 (16.63m).
In the javelin, Connell native Ashton Riner of Brigham Young University finished fifth with a season best throw of 182-3 (55.57m).
Washington's Saydi Orange finished 20th at a school freshman record 162-7 (49.57m), while Ida Eikeng, who is already going to the NCAA championships in the heptathlon, was 22nd at 160-7 (48.95m), and Tanya Simora was 33rd at 149-2 (45.48m).
Former Washington State throwers Valentina Barrios Bornacelli (164-10/50.25m) and Atina Kamasi (162-8/49.58m), competing for Missouri, finished 15th & 19th.
Washington's Naomi Smith was 23rd in the 10000 meters, which was the only track final contested. Smith ran 33:29.85.
Cristina Molteni of Washington State finished 27th in a personal best 33:33.92, while Gonzaga's Kristen Garcia was 32nd in 33:50.71.
Andrea Markezich of Washington started out with the leaders through the first half of the race, but faded to 34th in 33:58.00, four spots ahead of Gonzaga's Caramia Mestler in 34:17.80.
In first round action, Washington's Anna Gibson advanced to the second round in the 1500 on Saturday, running 4:16.82 to finish fourth in her heat, while Sophie O'Sullivan won her heat in 4:17.66.
Washington's Madison Heisterman (4:20.76), Washington State's Neema Kimtai (4:22.38), Gonzaga's Alicia Anderson (4:22.46), and Washington freshmen Ella Borsheim (4:25.90) & Chloe Foerster (4:27.88) didn't advance.
Jasneet Nijjar of Washington State ran 54.10 in the 400 and didn't advance.
In the 800, Washington's Carley Thomas won her heat in 2:04.88 to advance to the second round. Washington State's Elena Willems advanced as a time qualifier, running 2:06.67 to finish fourth in her heat. UW's Marlena Preigh ran 2:08.40 and didn't advance.
WSU's Mackenzie Fletcher ran a personal best 59.00 in the 499 hurdles to finish fourth in her heat and advance to Saturday's second round as a time qualifier.
Friday, the men return to Hornet Stadium with the discus final starting at 1:00 pm, and the first race on the track the 4 x 100 relay at 5 pm.

DAVIS ADVANCES TO FRIDAY'S STEEPLE FINALS AT NCAA D2 CHAMPS...
In Pueblo, Colorado, Western Washington's Ila Davis advanced to the finals in the women's steeplechase to highlight Washington athletes competing at the NCAA Division II Track & Field Championships at the Colorado State University/Pueblo's ThunderBowl Thursday.
Davis finished sixth in her heat in 11:01.05, then had to wait for the results of the second heat, before advancing to Friday afternoon's final as the last time qualifier.
In the men's steeplechase, Western's Jeret Gillingham finished eighth in his heat in 9:30.05, and didn't advance. The same fate befell teammate Drew Weber in the men's 1500, as he was ninth in his heat in 3:53.73.
Central Washington's E'Lexis Hollis was seventh in her heat of the women's 100 in 11.78.
In addition to Davis running in the finals of the women's steeple, Central Washington's Lauryn Chandler runs in the prelims of the 100 hurdles.
Western Washington's Marian Ledesma and Weber compete in the prelims of the women's and men's 800, while David Njeri of Seattle Pacific, the school's lone entry, goes in the finals of the men's triple jump.
