Anna Grabowski of Gonzaga wins University women's 5000 at Drake Relays...


DES MOINES, Iowa--
Gonzaga's Anna Grabowski (Lance Jording photo) won the women's open 5000 meters Thursday at the Drake Relays to kick off the first full day of running events at one of the country's most prestigious relay meets.

Grabowski took the win, running a time of 16:33.98. Despite inclement weather, she ran in the peloton for the first half of the race before taking the front of the race with the four laps to go. Grabowski secured the win on her birthday, taking home the victory with a strong finish with back to back sub 80 second laps on the final two laps.

Jacob Alfonso and Charlie Goss represented the Gonzaga men at the Relays. Alfonso finished fourth in his 1500 meters race, ending with a time of 3:54.63 in the university/college 1500. 

Goss finished with a time of 1:53.99 in the university/college 800 meters, running very even splits to finish with his final time.

The Drake Relays continues Friday, as the men's team will run in the 4x1600 meters relay at 10am Pacific time, while the women's team will have two runners in the 400 meters race set for 3:15 Pacific time.

PENN RELAYS RECAP...

The Washington Huskies started off their three days of competition at the Penn Relays in Philadelphia Thursday with a light slate.

Washington's Julia David-Smith finished sixth in her heat of the women's 1500, running 4:16.18 and tenth overall, as Kylie Finger of Wisconsin out of the second heat won in 4:11.69.

An hour later, Josephine Welin finished 18th in the 5000 meters, running a personal best 16:13.17, as Allie Zealand of Liberty won in 15:26.38.

Friday, Washington has teams entered in both distance medley relays, and the two longest races--the men's 4 x mile, and the women's 4 x 1500 on Saturday. 

Flotrack ($) will stream all two remaining days of the Penn Relays.
