Husky women back in the USTFCCCA national top 25 after SoCal trip...
NEW ORLEANS--The Washington women's squad roared back onto the top 25 of the USTFCCCA Division I National Track & Field Rating Index released Tuesday after being off the previous week after competing at the Stanford Invitational, while the men's squad are still just on the outside of the top 25.
The UW women come in at number 18, after national leading marks in the heptathlon from Sofia Cosculluela (Paul Merca file photo), and from pole vaulter Hana Moll at the Mt. SAC Relays.
Cosculluela scored 6093 points in the heptathlon last week, while Hana Moll upped her outdoor collegiate record in the pole vault, clearing 15-9 (4.80m).
Moll's mark earned her last week's USTFCCCA Division I women's national co-athlete of the week along with BYU's Jane Hedengren.
Other top 20 marks from last week, which factor into the scoring in the rating index, came from Chloe Foerster (4:08.64, number 13) in the 1500 from the Bryan Clay Invitational, and Amanda Moll (14-3.25/4.35m, number 17) in the pole vault from Mt. SAC.
The nation's top five women's teams are in order: Georgia, BYU, Florida, LSU, and South Carolina.
Big Ten teams in the national top 25 include number 8 Illinois, number 10 Nebraska, number 15 USC, and number 20 Minnesota.
On the men's side, Washington is just outside the top 25 at number 30, despite top 20 marks from Alex Rhodes (44.94, number 5) in the 400, and from Reuben Reina (3:37.32, number 13) & Tyler Bilyard (3:37.99, number 15).
The top 5 teams in the men's D1 rating index are in order: Georgia, Arkansas, Texas A&M, Oregon, and Tennessee.
Other men's teams from the Big Ten in the national top 25 include: number 8 USC, number 9 Nebraska, number 13 Minnesota, and number 19 Penn State.
DIVISION II...
The Western Washington men's team is the only GNAC squad in the Division II national rating index, comping in at number 17, down four spots.
The Vikings' top 20 marks from last week came from Liam Wall (188-3/57.40m, number 5) in the discus; the men's 4 x 400 relay (3:09.56, number 10); and from steeplechasers Eli Williams (9:02.13, number 17) and George Fernandez (9:02.39, number 19).
Wall's mark came from the Beach Invitational in Long Beach; the relay was from the Pacific Coast Invitational, and the two marks from Williams and Fernandez came at the University of La Verne Leopard Invitational.
The nation's top five men's teams in D2 are in order: Grand Valley State, Minnesota State, Pittsburg State, Colorado School of Mines, and West Texas A&M.
In the women's rating index, the nation's top five teams are in order: West Texas A&M, Pittsburg State, Grand Valley State, Colorado School of Mines, and Missouri Southern.
Western Washington at 32 and Central Washington at 34 are the two closest GNAC schools to the national top 25.
