Twelve hour Stanford Invitational extravaganza lives up to the hype...

STANFORD, California--
They said that it was going to be a twelve hour extravaganza.

Indeed, the first day of the two-day Stanford Invitational at Cobb Track and Angell Field on the sun-drenched campus of Stanford University lived up to its billing.

Friday's portion of the meet was topped off by a collegiate record by Brigham Young University freshman Jane Hedengren (Paul Merca photo for Track & Field News), who ran a 66 second last 400 to emerge victorious, stopping the clock in 30:46.80 in a dual of the ages to hold off New Mexico's Pamela Kosgei, who ran 30:49.99.

The old collegiate record was set by Florida's Parker Valby two years ago at the Bryan Clay Invitational, when she ran 30:50.43.

Behind the dynamic duo, Washington's Chloe Thomas was seventh in a school record 32:19.59, while Gonzaga's Logan Hofstee was ninth in 32:21.15.

Washington State's Evans Kurui, who won this meet last year, finished third in the 10000, running 27:48.06, as New Mexico's Habtom Samuel won, breaking Kurui's meet record of 27:37.32, by running 27:30.51.

Washington's Evan Jenkins finished in a school record 28:03.51.

Other highlights:

--Washington's Alex Rhodes (Paul Merca photo) ran 45.22 to win the men's 400 meters, the fastest mark by a Husky in eighteen years, and the third fastest time in school history;

--UW alum Joe Waskom finished fifth in the men's invitational steeplechase, running 8:37.10, just ahead of Cashmere's Rob McManus of Montana State who ran 8:37.46, after leading for part of the race;
