Ex Brooks Beast Jessica McClain top American at Boston Marathon...

BOSTON--Former Brooks Beast Jessica (Tonn) McClain (Mike Scott photo) was among a group of several Americans lurking amongst the lead group over the first 18 miles of Monday's Boston Marathon, but finished as the top American in the field with her fifth place finish.

McClain, who competed for the Seattle based club until 2020, but is still sponsored by the Seattle based company, ran a personal best of 2:20:49 on the point-to-point course that started in Hopkinton and finished in Boston.

While the time will not be recognized by World Athletics as a personal best because of the point-to-point course, it's still significantly faster than the listed personal best of 2:25:46 set at the 2024 US Olympic Trials.

Washington alum Izzi Batt-Doyle of Australia, an Olympian at 5000 and 10000 meters, finished 16th in 2:25:05.

The two were part of a large group of about 20 who reached the halfway point in 1:11:02, just outside 2:22:04 pace.

Kenya's Sharon Lokedi broke away from a group of three just past the 21 mile mark to retain her Boston Marathon title in 2:18:51, winning by 44 seconds from Loice Chemnung (2:19:35). Ngugi-Cooper was third in 2:20:07 to complete the Kenyan sweep of the podium.

For McClain, the time is the fastest run by an American in the history of the Boston Marathon.

In the men's race, Seattle Pacific alum Turner Wiley finished 29th in 2:10:16, while Spokane native Nick Hauger was 34th in 2:12:05.

John Korir of Kenya successfully defended his title at the Boston Marathon with a course record of 2:01:52, as he surged clear of mid-race leader Milkesa Mengesha of Ethiopia at the famed Heartbreak Hill.

Second place finisher Alphonce Simbu (2:02:47) of Tanzania and Benson Kipruto (2:02:50) all ducked under the previous course record of 2:03:02, set back in 2011.
