Husky combined event group starts strong at Mt. SAC...

WALNUT, California--The four days of competition for Washington's nine Division I and II schools in Southern California kicked off Wednesday with the first day of the Mt. SAC Relays Combined Events meet at Hilmer Lodge Stadium on the campus of Mt. San Antonio College.

The University of Washington's Sofia Cosculluela (Paul Merca photo) ended day one of the heptathlon competition with a first day score of 3637 points, putting her in fifth place at the break.

Arkansas alum Taliyah Brooks, who finished third at last year's world championships in the heptathlon, leads at the break with 3866 points.

Cosculluela, a former Spanish national champion and sixth place finisher at last year's NCAA championships in Eugene, started her day by running 13.48 in the 100 hurdles.

She then cleared 5-5 (1.65m) in the high jump, before uncorking a huge personal best of 45-10.75 (13.99m) in the shot put. eclipsing her previous best of 43-1.5 (13.14m) set in 2024, before coming to the UW.

Cosculluela finished day 1 by dipping under 24 seconds in the 200 for the first time in her career, running 23.84. Her previous personal best was 24.02, set in Jerusalem in 2023.

In the decathlon, redshirt freshman Teko Cates started his first collegiate decathlon with a five-event score of 4143 points, leaving the track in third place.

He started day one with a time of 10.78 in the 100 meters, then soared 23-11.5 (7.30m) in the long jump.

Cates then threw the shot 43-2.50 (13.17m), then cleared 6-9.75 (2.08m) in the high jump.

He then closed out day one by running 50.51 in the 400.

Former Cal All-American Hakim McMorris leads at the break with 4430 points.


Thursday, most of the Washington schools will have athletes in action. The Husky combined events group finishes up at Mt. SAC with day 2 of the heptathlon and decathlon, while the javelin throwers are in action.

Western Washington will have most of its team competing in Long Beach at the Pacific Coast Invitational, while three Viking steeplechasers are at the Leopard Invitational in La Verne, between Claremont and Pomona.

Washington, Washington State, Gonzaga, Central Washington, Western Washington, and Seattle Pacific have entries in day 1 of the Bryan Clay Invitational hosted by Azusa Pacific University in Azusa, as the steeplechase and the 10000s take center stage. The open section of the 10000s are in the morning and the invitational sections in the evening.
