WEEKEND RECAP: Maurice Woodring of Western runs school record and number one D2 time in 400H...
While we were on the ground at the Stanford Invitational, there were a number of meets on the West Coast involving seven of the eight Washington Division I and II teams competing over the weekend:
TRITON INVITATIONAL...
In La Jolla, California, Western Washington's Maurice Woodring (Jacob Thompson/WWU Athletics photo) broke his own school record in the 400 hurdles at the Triton Invitational in a second place finish.
Woodring ran 50.69 to surpass his old school record of 50.95 set last year at the NCAA D2 championships.
It's currently the fastest time in NCAA Division II so far this season.
The Vikings' squad of Lucas Brenek, Nolan Mickenham, Jackson Moffitt, and Javonte Sutton set a school record of 40.51 in winning the men's 4 x 100 relay.
Other Viking highlights:
Ari Nguyen won the women's 400 hurdles in 61.79, while the women's 4 x 400 relay team of Casie Kleine, Jayda Darroch, Kennedy Cook, and Bec Bennett got another win in 3:42.76. For the Viking 4 x 4, it's the second fastest time in Division II so far this season.
Hannah Polkinghorn was second in the women's long jump with a mark of 18-6.5 (5.65m).
Woodring came back to run the anchor leg of the 4 x 400 relay with Lucas Brenek, Sam Foust, and Jackson Moffitt, as they finished third in 3:10.64, the fourth fastest time in D2 so far this season.
Aiden Cox was second in the men's pole vault at 14-7.25 (4.45m).
MIKE FANELLI TRACK CLASSIC...
In San Francisco, Western Washington's Emmy Kroontje set a school record in finishing fourth in the women's 1500 at the Mike Fanelli Track Classic.
Kroontje finished in a time of 4:26.57, breaking the old school record of 4:29.71 set by current assistant coach Haley Stensland (O'Connor) set in 2015.
Jared Alderfer set a PR in the 3000m steeplechase placing 3rd out of 51 runners in the event with a time of 9:00.54. The time is fifth in school history, and sits eighth in D2 so far this season.
UNLV REBEL ELITE...
In Las Vegas, Eastern Washington earned a pair of wins and four other podium finishes at the UNLV Rebel Elite meet hosted by the University of Nevada/Las Vegas Saturday.
Jordyn Grady won the women's 400 hurdles, running 59.16, while Cort Gebbers won the men's discus with a throw of 163-8 (49.89m).
Owen Higgins finished second in the 800 meters, as he ran 1:49.55. Maddy Shekhawat was second in the 110 hurdles in a wind-aided time of 13.78 (+2.2).
Dieumerci Migani had a good double, finishing third in the long jump with a best of 23-2.75 (7.08m). He followed it up with a second place finish in the triple jump, bounding 48-10 (14.88m).
WHITWORTH PEACE MEET...
Friday in Spokane, Central Washington earned three wins, while Eastern Washington and Seattle Pacific each had two wins, and Gonzaga got a win at the Whitworth Peace Meet, hosted by Whitworth University.
Elise Hopper of Central Washington, who came off a strong effort at last week's Peyton/Shotwell Invitational, where she won the 400 hurdles, won the 200 meters in a personal best 23.73.
Azariah Miller won the women's triple jump with a best of 39-2.5 (11.95m).
On the men's side, the Wildcats got their lone win from David Brown in the 110 hurdles, as he ran 14.38.
Eastern's two wins on the day came from Henry Nelson, who won the men's 800 meters in 1:51.60, and from Ashley Fuller in the discus at 149-6 (45.57m).
Seattle Pacific got a win from Tawau Aboudou in the men's triple jump, taking the event with a best of 47-2.5 (14.39m).
Maya Ewing won the women's steeplechase in a time of 10:51.42.
Gonzaga got its lone win of the day in the 1500 meters, as Maria Taggi Padro led a Zag 1-2-3 finish, running 4:27.28.
The Zags were paced in the race by Rosina Machu, who was originally scheduled to run the 10000 Friday night at Stanford, but had to withdraw as she got sick a few days before the team traveled for the meet.
