Washington relay squads finish fifth and sixth in DMR at Penn Relays...
PHILADELPHIA--Friday was distance medley relay day at the Penn Relays, as the Washington Huskies finished fifth and sixth in the women's and men's races.
In the women's DMR, the Huskies, with Mia Cochran (Paul Merca file photo) on the leadoff leg, started in fifth with a leg of 3:16.93 before handing off to Chloe Symon on the 400 leg.
Symon, normally an 800 specialist, ran 55.39 on her leg before handing to fellow Canadian Jenica Swartz, who ran 2:03.61 on her leg.
Swartz gave the baton in fourth to Chloe Foerster, who ran 4:33.95 on the 1600 leg, as the foursome finished fifth in 10:49.27.
North Carolina won in a time of 10:36.82.
In the men's DMR, Washington's squad of Tyler Bilyard, Alex Rhodes, Martin Barco and Reuben Reina had a slow start and finished sixth, as Oregon won in 9:32.08.
Bilyard opened with a 2:52.14 on the 1200 putting the Huskies eighth before handing to Alex Rhodes. His 44.78 leg got the Dawgs into third, before handing to Martin Barco on the 800 leg.
Barco's 1:45.29 kept Washington in third before handing off to Reuben Reina for the 1600.
The 1600 turned out to be a tactical affair as several teams were in contention with a few laps to go.
Oregon took the win in 9:32.08, with Simeon Birnbaum running 4:10.72 on the anchor, while Reina ran 4:11.86 as the Huskies finished in 9:34.06.
The Penn Relays conclude Saturday with Washington running in the men's 4 x mile, and the Husky women in the 4 x 1500 and 4 x 800 relays.
Flotrack ($) will stream the final day of the Penn Relays.
ZAGS THIRD IN DRAKE RELAYS 4 X 1600...
In Des Moines, the Gonzaga 4 x 1600 relay team of Ryan Mitchell, Charles Goss, Hayden Roberts, Logan Schwartz finished third in 16:39.84 at the Drake Relays Friday.
Mitchell got it started with a 4:11.62 opening leg to put the Zags in fourth.
Goss ran 4:12.95 as Gonzaga dropped to fifth.
On the third leg, Roberts got Gonzaga back to third with the fastest leg in 4:05.32, but by then Air Force and Iowa State had broken away.
Logan Schwartz maintained the position despite a late run by Drake, as the Zags held on in 16:39.84. Schwartz finished with a split of 4:09.86.
Air Force took the win in 16:25.88.
On the women's side, Greta Dani was second in her heat of the 400, running 55.99 to finish 15th overall.
Saturday, Sam Ellis, Waleed Suliman and Joe Waskom, all of whom ran in Tuesday's USATF Road Mile championships, are entered in the invitational men's 1500, which is part of World Athletics' Continental Tour.
Washington alum Claire Yerby is entered in the invitational women's mile.
Finally, former Pullman resident and reigning world chamnpion Katie Moon, along with Washington alum Nastassja Campbell, are entered in Saturday's invitational pole vault.
RunnerSpace.com ($) will stream the Drake Relays, except for a two hour window on Saturday (Noon-2pm Pacific time) when the majority of the World Athletics Continental Tour events will be shown on CBS Sports Network (channels 412/1303 on Seattle Comcast).
