Kamiak's Miller Warme leads qualifiers in 400 hurdles on day 2 of World Athletics U20 champs...
EUGENE--Kamiak HS rising senior Miller Warme of the USA (Ken Martinez/@westcoastxc photo) was the top qualifier in the opening round of the men's 400 hurdles on day 2 of the World Athletics Under 20 Championships at Hayward Field on the University of Oregon campus.
With the smoky conditions the big story so far of the meet, due to the wildfires happening in Western Canada, Eastern Washington and parts of Oregon, making air quality in Eugene to near dangerous levels (air quality index in Eugene at 6 pm Pacific time Thursday was dangerous between 170 and 180), the athletes competing continued to plug away.
In Thursday morning's session, Warme led from gun to tape, running 49.88 to easily win and grab one of the three auto qualifiers from the heat to advance to Saturday night's semifinals at 6:41 pm.
Ukraine's Yevhen Zhmailo (Ken Martinez/@westcoastxc photo), the double Washington 4A long and triple jump champ out of Kirkland's Lake Washington HS, had the tenth best mark in qualifying in the men's triple jump.
Zhmailo opened his series with a jump of 51-5 (15.67m), and followed up with his best of 51-7.25 (15.73m) before fouling in round 3.
It was still good enough to advance to Friday night's final at 6:25 pm.
In the third section of the women's 1500 Thursday night, incoming Husky freshmen Milla Roberts of Australia (hip 7) and Sherry Drury of Japan (Ken Martinez/@westcoastxc photo) finished third and fifth to advance to Sunday's final at 1:52 pm.
The two Huskies ran together in about seventh through the first 800, then worked their way to the front, with Drury just off the lead approaching the bell lap.
The top five broke away from the rest of the field, and cruised in comfortably, with Roberts third in 4:19.55, and Drury fifth at 4:20.20.
In addition to Zhmailo in the men's triple jump finals Friday, Washington's Chloe Symon and incoming freshman Mary MacLean from Canada go in the semi finals of the women's 800 starting at 6:05 pm.
MacLean will run in the second of three heats, while Symon races in heat 3.
The semifinals are cut and dry: finish in the top three to advance to the finals on Saturday night at 7:17 pm.
Washington redshirt freshman Owen Powell of the USA runs in the final of the men's 3000 meters at 8:25 pm against a large field of 23 runners, led by top seed Emmanuel Kiprono of Kenya.
Kiprono, the silver medalist at the World Cross Country Championship U20 race in Tallahassee back in January, goes into the world juniors with a time of 7:35.40 run at the Kenyan trials in Nairobi in May.
Peacock ($) will stream all sessions of the World Athletics U20 champs.
BROOKS BEASTS TO MAKE PRESENCE AT SIR WALTER MILER FRIDAY NIGHT...
Four athletes from Seattle's Brooks Beasts will race in Friday night's Sir Walter Miler at Meredith College in Raleigh, North Carolina.
Kayley DeLay, Teagan Schein-Becker, and 2024 US Olympian and Beasts newcomer Juliette Whittaker race in the invitational women's mile starting at 6:15 pm Pacific.
Waleed Suliman of the Beasts, the 2024 champion is entered in the invitational men's race. He'll be joined by Washington alums Luke Houser and Aidan Ryan.
American mile record holder Sinclaire Johnson is the meet's top seed at 4:16.32, set last year, while Paris Olympian and 3:46.90 miler Hobbs Kessler is the men's top seed.
Media partner RunnerSpace.com ($) will stream the race live starting at 5:15 pm Pacific.
