UW's Cosculluela starts European Champs heptathlon in 21st place...
In Birmingham, Washington's Sofia Cosculluela (photo courtesy Spanish Athletics Federation/RFEA) of Spain stands 21st after the first day of competition in the heptathlon at the European Championships at Alexander Stadium.
Cosculluela, the reigning NCAA champion in the event and school record holder, started her day with a 13.42 clocking in the 100 hurdles.
In the high jump, she managed to clear 5-5 (1.65m), then only threw 38-11.75 (11.88m), well off her season and personal best of 45-10.75 (13.99m) set at the Mt. SAC Relays.
Cosculluela finished the day by running 23.94 in the 200 meters, only 1/10th of a second off her personal best. The mark gives her a one-day total of 3496 points, 472 points off the lead.
Poland's Adrianna Sulek-Schubert leads at the break with 3968 points.
Saturday, Cosculluela returns for day two of the heptathlon. Additionally, Washington alum Sophie O'Sullivan of Ireland runs in the first round of the women's 1500.

BROOKS BEASTS TO SEND CONTINGENT TO PORTLAND FOR STUMPTOWN TWILIGHT...
As the professional season enters the final five weeks, the Seattle based Brooks Beasts will send a group of athletes down to Portland for Saturday's Stumptown Twilight meet at Griswold Stadium on the campus of Lewis and Clark College.
Brandon Miller, who has a four-meet win streak on the line, will run in the 600 meters, where he'll take a shot at Johnny Gray's world best of 1:12.81 set on May 24, 1986.
Going into this weekend, Miller is world ranked number 7 in the men's 800, with a month to go before the World Athletics Ultimate Championships in Budapest, as he looks to ensure his place in the meet. which is solely based on world rankings.
Sam Whitmarsh and John Rivera will race over 800 meters, while Valery Tobias and Kristie Schoffield go in the women's 800.
Waleed Suliman, Brannon Kidder, Max Davies, and Parker Stokes are all entered in the 1500, along with Washington alum Sam Ellis, who announced that he is returning to Georgia to join the Atlanta Track Club Elite.
Another Washington alum, Eleanor Fulton, is matched up in the women's 1500 against Stanford alum Christina Aragon of the Nike Oregon TC.
